Career discernment

As I think about my future career as a librarian, I’m still trying to figure out what specialization(s) I might like to pursue, and I’m guessing the kind of institution I will work in would make a difference in my career too. As I see it, one of the big breakdowns comes between public and academic libraries, so I’m currently trying to decide between those and decide if I even need to decide. While there are skills and positions like reference and cataloging that translate to both, I imagine that even those would be different in the different environments.

Personal experience would be the best way to figure everything out, but I’m not in a place to really get that at this point, so I’d love some responses from those of you who do have experience: academic librarians, why did you choose academic libraries as opposed to public ones? Public librarians, why did you choose public libraries as opposed to academic ones? Should I just go for reference or something else and let the cards fall where they will?
